Dryer Error Codes by Brand
What an error code tells you, what it does not, and why the same code means different things on different machines. Plus brand guides for Whirlpool, LG and Samsung.

An error code narrows the problem down. It does not diagnose it. The code tells you which system the control board believes is misbehaving, and the component that actually failed still has to be tested.
That distinction matters because the most common codes across every brand point at heat and airflow, and the most common cause of those is not a failed part at all. It is a blocked vent.
Do this before you look up anything
Run the dryer on a heat cycle and check airflow at the exterior vent hood. You want strong steady flow holding the damper open, not a flutter.

What the code families mean
Airflow and duct restriction. Some manufacturers detect this directly and say so. These are the most actionable codes on any dryer, because the fix is usually cleaning rather than a part.
Heating. The dryer is running too hot, or not reaching temperature. Overheating usually traces to restricted exhaust. Insufficient heat on an electric machine can also come from a lost leg of supply voltage, which is an electrical problem rather than a dryer problem.
Temperature sensing. A thermistor reading out of range. Sometimes the sensor has failed, and sometimes the sensor is working correctly and reporting a genuine over-temperature caused by trapped heat.
Door. The dryer does not register the door as latched. Often the latch itself, sometimes the switch.
Moisture sensing. The sensor that decides when the load is dry is misreading, frequently because of fabric softener residue building a film on the sensor strips.
Control and communication. Internal components not talking to each other. Usually the control board or a harness connection.
Power and voltage. Supply problems. On a 240V electric dryer, a lost leg at the breaker or outlet produces a machine that tumbles but never heats.
Motor. The drum is not turning, or the control is not getting the response it expects from the motor. A motor that has overheated may reset once it cools, and then do it again.
The codes that most reliably mean your vent
Three manufacturers are explicit about duct restriction, and if you own one of these the code is doing your diagnosis for you.
Flow Sense measures airflow and reports restriction as a percentage. The number after the d is roughly how blocked the system measured the duct to be. See the LG guide.

Why the code lists you find online contradict each other
This is worth understanding before you trust any list, including ours.
Search a short code like E1, E2 or E3 and you will find confident, specific, mutually incompatible answers. One site says E3 is a thermistor fault. Another says the drive motor. Another says a control board communication error. They cannot all be right, and none of them is obviously lying.
The reason is that short numeric codes are not standardised. A manufacturer reuses E1 across completely different platforms built years apart, and it maps to whichever circuit that particular control board checks first. Heat pump models add codes that do not exist on conventional ones. The same three characters genuinely mean different things on two machines wearing the same badge.
Longer and more distinctive codes are far more dependable. LG d90 and Whirlpool AF mean one thing because those manufacturers assigned them one job. A bare E2 does not.
So we have not published a table of single-digit codes for every brand. We could fill a page with them and rank for it, and a fair number of the entries would be wrong for your machine. What follows is the reliable way to get the right answer instead.
How to look yours up properly
- Find the model number. Usually on the door frame, inside the door opening, or on a plate behind the machine. Not the serial number.
- Use the manual for that model. Manufacturers publish them free by model number. This is the only authoritative mapping.
- Write the code down exactly. Including whether letters are upper or lower case, since some brands use both and they mean different things.
- Note what the dryer is doing. Tumbling without heat, heating without tumbling, or stopping partway are each a different picture, and the behaviour often identifies the fault faster than the code does.
Brands that share a platform
Badges do not always match engineering. Whirlpool builds for Maytag, Amana, Roper, Estate and KitchenAid, so a Whirlpool code list frequently applies to all of them. Kenmore is a retail brand rather than a manufacturer, and a Kenmore dryer may have been built by Whirlpool, LG or others depending on the year, which the model number prefix identifies.

When to stop rather than troubleshoot
Stop using the dryer and call if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet is too hot to touch comfortably, or if a heat or overheating code keeps returning after the vent has been cleared. A tripped high-limit thermostat or a blown thermal fuse is a safety device reporting a real condition, and the condition does not go away because the display did.
Gas models add their own reason for caution. Anything involving the burner, igniter or gas supply is not a troubleshooting exercise.
Clearing a code is not fixing it
Unplugging the dryer for a minute and restoring power will clear a genuinely transient fault, and it is a reasonable first move. If the code returns, it is reporting a real condition.
Heat and airflow codes in particular mean the machine is overheating every cycle. Continuing to run it that way is how an inexpensive thermostat replacement turns into a heating element replacement, and eventually into a repair or replace decision that arrived years early.

My brand is not listed. What now?
Check whether it shares a platform with one that is, since Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, Roper and Estate generally follow Whirlpool. Otherwise the model-specific manual is the reliable source, and the code families above still tell you which system is involved.
Will resetting the dryer clear the code permanently?
Only if the fault was transient. A code that returns is reporting a condition that still exists, and airflow codes in particular come back because the duct is still blocked.
Can a blocked vent really cause a sensor code?
Yes, and it is common. A thermistor reporting an over-temperature may be working perfectly and telling the truth. Replacing a sensor that was accurate leaves the real cause untouched.
Is there a diagnostic mode I can enter?
Most brands have one, and the entry sequence varies by model. It is genuinely useful in the right hands, though it can also clear stored fault history you would rather a technician saw first.
My dryer tumbles but never heats and shows no code. Why?
On a 240V electric dryer this is classically a lost leg of power, since the motor runs on 120V and the element needs both legs. Reset the double breaker before assuming a failed part. A blown thermal fuse produces the same symptom.
Should I just replace the part the code names?
Not on the code alone. Codes point at a circuit, not a component, and the named part is often the messenger. Test first, or you buy the part twice.
