What dryer vent cleaning actually removes
Every load pushes lint through the vent line. The lint trap catches some of it. The rest travels down the duct, and wherever the air slows — at an elbow, a sag in flexible hose, a long horizontal run — it settles and builds a layer.
South Florida makes it worse. Humid air means longer drying cycles, and longer cycles push more lint through. Condo buildings along the coast were built with long horizontal duct runs to exterior walls, sometimes forty feet or more, and many have never been cleaned. Homes in the western suburbs vent up through the attic to a roof cap, where flexible duct sags between supports and collects lint at every low point.
Once airflow drops, the dryer cannot exhaust moisture. Clothes stay damp, cycles run twice, and the machine runs hotter than it was designed to.
Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning
The clearest sign, and usually the first one people notice.
Heat that should be leaving through the vent is staying in the room.
Strong steady airflow should push it open. Weak movement means a restriction.
Moisture that is not venting is condensing inside the duct.

How we clean a dryer vent
Most residential cleanings take under an hour. Long condo runs and attic-to-roof runs take longer.
Inspect first
We look at the transition duct, the wall opening, and the exterior hood before touching anything, so we know what kind of run we are dealing with.
Pull and disconnect
The dryer comes forward and the transition duct comes off. That gives us the full vent line and lets us check the transition hose, where a lot of lint collects.
Run the brush line
A 50-foot brush driven by a drill. It rotates as it travels, so it scrubs the duct wall along the entire run instead of pushing a plug of lint further in.
Clear the exterior hood
The hood is where lint packs hardest. We clear it and check that the damper still opens and closes freely.
Check the duct material
We tell you what your concealed run is made of. Foil or plastic in a hidden run will re-clog faster and should be replaced.
Verify airflow
We reconnect, run a cycle, and confirm strong steady flow at the outside vent. You see the difference before we leave.
Can you clean a dryer vent yourself?
Partly. A hardware-store brush kit will clear the first few feet from the wall opening, and that is worth doing between professional cleanings.
The problem is where the lint actually sits. On a twenty-foot run it collects in the middle, at the elbows, and at the exterior hood — past the reach of a short kit and well past the reach of a shop vac held at the opening. Clearing the first few feet can also push a plug of lint further down the duct, which makes the restriction worse rather than better.
Three situations where a professional is the only realistic option: the run terminates on the roof, the run is longer than about fifteen feet, or the dryer is a stacked unit in a closet that has to come out before anything can be reached.
Between cleanings, the useful habits are simple. Clear the lint screen after every load. Once in a while, run water over the screen — if it beads up instead of passing through, fabric softener has filmed it over and it needs scrubbing. And leave a few inches of clearance behind the dryer so the transition duct is not crushed flat.
What happens if a clogged vent is left alone
The dryer keeps working, which is why this gets ignored. What changes is how hard it works.
The appliance wears out faster. A dryer fighting a blocked duct runs longer and hotter every cycle. Heating elements, cycling thermostats, and thermal fuses are the parts that fail from that, and they fail repeatedly until the airflow is fixed. A thermal fuse that blows twice is not a bad part, it is a symptom.
Energy costs rise. Two cycles instead of one, on every load.
Moisture goes somewhere it should not. A dryer moves a large amount of water vapor. If it cannot leave through the duct, it condenses inside it — or worse, inside a wall or attic if the run is damaged.

Do you clean the whole vent or just the opening?
The whole run. The brush line is 50 feet and drill-driven, so it travels the full duct length rather than stopping a few feet in at the wall. We also clear the exterior hood and check the damper.
Can I just use a shop vac at the wall?
It clears the first few feet. The buildup that actually restricts airflow usually sits in the middle of the run or at the exterior hood, and a vac at the opening never reaches it.
Will cleaning fix my slow drying?
If the duct is the restriction, yes, and usually back to a single cycle. If the dryer itself has a failing heating element, thermostat, or moisture sensor, cleaning will not change anything. We check airflow so you know which one you have before paying for the wrong fix.
Do you clean vents in condos and apartments?
